Safed Musli / (Andrographis paniculata Nees.) |
White Musli or Safed Musli is used for preparation of a health tonic in general
and sexual debilities. As it is very rich in glycosides, it works very well in
curing impotency. Safed Musli is vitalizer and health-giving tonic/ curative for pre-natal and post-natal problems/ natural aphrodisiac alternative to viagara/ restorative for immunity-improvement/ remedy for diabetes and arthritis. The roots are widely used as a natural "sex tonic" and is an integral part of more than 100 herbal drug formulations. Dried roots of Chlorophytum contain 42% carbohydrate, 80–9% protein, 3–4% fiber and 2–17% saponin (Bordia et al. 1995). Research studies on Chlorophytum conducted in India and elsewhere indicate that saponins are responsible for medicinal properties. Saponins are thought to be highest in roots of forest origin. |
| HONEY | For past thousands of years, honey has been used to treat a variety of ailments through topical application, but only recently have the antiseptic and antibacterial properties of honey been chemically explained. Wound Gels that contain antibacterial honey and have regulatory approval for wound care are now available to help conventional medicine in the battle against drug resistant strains of bacteria MRSA. As an antimicrobial agent honey may have the potential for treating a variety of ailments. One New Zealand researcher says a particular type of honey may be useful in treating MRSA infections. Antibacterial properties of honey are the result of the low water activity causing osmosis, hydrogen peroxide effect, and high acidity. Honey may also be used to alleviate the effects of a sore throat. It is mixed with lemon juice and consumed. The mixture coats the throat alleviating discomfort, and the antibacterial, antiseptic properties are good for the throat as well. |

Imli or Tamarind /
(Tamarindus indica) |
Tamarind is a multipurpose plant. Its leaves, flowers, and even seedlings, make a tasty broth. The foliage is good for cattle fodder. It is also used as mulch for tender plants and it composts into good manure. The pulp of the fruit is used as a spice in Asian cuisine. The pulp of a young fruit is very sour, and hence suitable for main dishes, whereas a ripened fruit is sweeter and can be used in desserts, drinks, or as a snack. The pulp, leaves, and the bark also have medical applications. Due to its denseness and durability, tamarind heartwood can be used in making furniture and wood flooring. |
| Amla or Indian Gooseberry /(Phyllanthus emblica) |
Indian
gooseberry has undergone preliminary research, demonstrating in
vitro
antiviral and antimicrobial properties. Experimental preparations of
leaves, bark or fruit have shown potential efficacy against laboratory models of
disease, such as for inflammation, cancer, age-related renal disease, and
diabetes. A human pilot study demonstrated reduction of blood cholesterol levels
in both normal and hypercholesterolemia.
Although fruits are
reputed to contain high amounts of ascorbic acid (vitamin C), the specific
contents are disputed and the overall antioxidant strength of amla may derive
instead from its high density of tannins and other polyphones'. The fruit
also contains flavonoids,
kaempferol, ellagic acid and
Gallic acid.

Charota Seed or Sickle Senna / (Cassia tora L.) |
The leaves and seeds are acrid, laxative , antiperiodic, anthelmintic,
ophthalmic, liver tonic, cardiotonic and expectorant. The leaves and seeds are
useful in leprosy, ringworm, flatulence, colic, dyspepsia, constipation, cough,
bronchitis, cardiac disorders. Dried seed contain protein (up to 24 percent) and is given as a protien rich feed for livestock and birds. Roasted seeds are substituted for coffee like Tephrosia seeds. Seeds yield tannins and dyes (yellow, blue and red). fields a gum (7.50%),which is a good agent for suspending and binding. The aqueous extracts of whole plant and leaves produces inhibitory allelopathic effects on common weeds specially on Parthenium hysterophorus. Recommended to grow in Parthenium infested areas as smoother crop. Stimulatory allelopathic effects on rice and wheat have been reported. Seeds used in preparation of sweet dishes. Leaves are popular potherb. In organic farms of India, Cassia tora is used as natural pesticide. Fungicidal activity of chrysophanic acid-9-anthrone from Cassia tora have been reported The leaves are useful in skin diseases and the seeds are laxative. Recommended for reclamation of saline, alkaline and brackish soils. Used as green manure crop in acidic soils. |

According to Ayurveda the plant is bitter, acrid, cooling, laxative, vulnerary,
antipyretic, antiperiodic, anti-inflammatory, expectorant, depurative,
soporific, anthelmintic, digestive and useful in hyperdispsia, buring sensation,
wounds, ulcers, chronic fever, malarial and intermittent fevers, inflammations,
cough, bronchitis, skin diseases, leprosy, colic, flatulence, diarrhoea,
dysentery, haemorrhoids etc. It is also a reputed Homoeopathic drug. In Bengal (India), is given to children suffering from stomach complaints. Recent experimental finding indicated that it is having antityphoid and antibiotic properties. It has been proved to be hepatopratective drug. |

Mahuwa / (Madhuca indica/Madhuca longifolia) |
Mahuwa Oil- Manufacturing of soaps particularly laundry soaps. As edible oil in a small qty. by tribals. Refined oil is used in edible purpose for blending in Vanaspati upto 5%. Refined oil finds use in the manufacturing of the lubricating grease and fatty alcohol. Manufacturing of candles, as bathing oil in jute industry, as a smoothing agent for spinning in woolen mills. For production of Stearic Acid. Mahuwa oil has emollient properties and is used in skin disease. Rheumatism and headche. It is also a laxative and considered useful in habitual constipation, piles and haemorrhoids and as an emetic. It can also used it as an illuminant and hair fixer. Mahuwa Cake- Mahuwa Cake contains 0.46% of a toxic and bitter saponin, mowrin which possess a digitalis like action on the heart and also haemolytic action. The presence of saponin renders the cake unfit for use as animal feed. It is used as manure either alone or in mixture with other cakes. Mahuwa Cake possess insecticidal property. It is also used along with Shikakai as hair wash. |

Sal Seed / (Shorea robusta Gaertn.f.) |
Sal Oil is suitable for soap making after blending with other softer oils. It is
also suitable as a substitute for coco butter in the manufacture of chocolates. Sal Oil Cake contains 10-12 per cent protein and about 50 per cent starch and can be used as cattle and poultry feed. Sal meal also contains 14% tannin consequently not more than 3% for chicks and 10% for laying hens and cattle is used in compound feeds. Starch could be isolated from Sal Meal and used in various industries. The detanning of Sal meal will provide tannins for leather industry and can be incorporated in cattle and poultry feed in large proportions. Sal Resin is also used for hardling softer waxes for use in the manufacture of shoe polishes, carbon paper, typewriter ribbon, plastering medium for walls and roofs and as a cementing material for plywood asbestors sheats etc. The resin is used in indigenous system of medicine as an astringent and detergent and is given is diarrhea and dicentry. |

Lemon Grass / (Cymbopogon) |
Lemon grass is widely used as an herb in Asian (particularly Vietnamese, Hmong,

cooking. It has a citrus flavour and can be dried and powdered, or used fresh. in some cases, it can be used as a mild depressant for the central nervous system. It is also sometimes used as a weed barrier. |

The oil is used extensively as a source of perfumery chemicals such as
citronellal, citronellol and geraniol. These chemicals find extensive use in
soap, perfumery, cosmetic and flavouring industries throughout the world. It is
also a renowned plant-based insect repellent. Citronella oil is popular as a 'natural' insect repellent. Its mosquito repellent qualities have been verified by research, including effectiveness in repelling Aedes aegypti (yellow fever mosquito). However, most citronella repellent formulas applied to the skin require reapplication after 30-60 minutes to remain efficient. |
| Gulkand or Rose Sugar |
Gulkand has been traditionally used as a cooling tonic to combat fatigue, lethargy, muscular aches, biliousness, itching, and heat-related conditions. Gulkand is highly useful in problems like Heavy menstrual discharge, white discharge in women. It's aroma helps secretion of Oxytocin, the love harmone. Hence the flower is associated with heart. It increases the constituent of the blood which strengthens heart, emotions, motherly affection. Nose-bleeding, hemorrage, vomitting of blood and or bitter-sour pitta, excess menstrual discharge, frequent abortions etc are the indications wherein Gulkand gives excellent cooling. The rose has special properties. It is sweet, cool, pungent and yet slight bitter. After digestion it produces sweet (Vipak) juice due to which it shows very benificial effect on intestines, improving digestion and metabolism. In many cases, when pimples arise due to heat in the blood, the use of Gulknad removes the heat from the intestines. This removes pimples and old blemishes. For children having worms in intestines, an ayurvedic powder `Vidanga' or `Vavding' is mixed in Gulkand and given to destroy the worms in a fortnight. The heat in the Gastro canal, duodenum is removed by Gulkand. In swelling and ulcer of intestines, the acidity shows up in blackish blemishes on forehead, face, blackish circles around eyes, loss of hair etc. Ayurveda describes rose as "Vrishya" meaning strengthening the semen. When semen has less sperms or sperms are getting weakened due to vaginal acidity, such couples will get benefits due to Gulkand. |
